[pdftex] Asymmetric margins

Is there a good reason not to use a high level macro package like
LaTeX or Context?  In LaTeX you can set \oddsidemargin or
\evensidemargin and Context is even better as far as the layout is
concerned.  In plain TeX it is probably better to modify the output
routine to distinguish between odd and even pages (if it doesn't it
already).  Redefining \footline to set margins is quite ugly.

What is so bad about LaTeX or Context?
