That's because ImageMagick will expand the jpeg to a bitmap, then
recompress the bitmap into the pdf (using jpeg compression again,
losing information).

So, the images you're putting into your PDF aren't as high quality as
your original.  That may not be a problem (since it'll still look
quite close) but it explains the speed difference.
