Han The Thanh asks about distributable Type 1 fonts that he can
legally augment with Vietnamese accents.

The URW fonts are available under the Aladdin Free Public License at

	http://www.artifex.com/downloads/

The X Consortium received donations of fonts, available at

	ftp://ftp.x.org/pub/R6.4/xc/fonts/scaled/Type1

in the Courier family from IBM (cour courb courbi couri) and from
Bitstream (c0419bt_ c0583bt_ c063bt_ c0648bt_ c0582bt_ c0611bt_
c0633bt_ c0649bt_), in the Charter family (bchb bchbi bchr bchri_)
from Bitstream, and in the Utopia family from Adobe (UTBI____ UTB_____
UTI_____ UTRG____).

The Bitstream Charter and Courier families contain this explicit
permission:

    (c) Copyright 1989-1992, Bitstream Inc., Cambridge, MA.

You are hereby granted permission under all Bitstream propriety rights
to use, copy, modify, sublicense, sell, and redistribute the 4 Bitstream
Charter (r) Type 1 outline fonts and the 4 Courier Type 1 outline fonts
for any purpose and without restriction; provided, that this notice is
left intact on all copies of such fonts and that Bitstream's trademark
is acknowledged as shown below on all unmodified copies of the 4 Charter
    Type 1 fonts.

I don't see similar language in the IBM and Adobe contributions, but
perhaps such a statement can be found somewhere at their Web sites. I
found a large table of packages (including fonts) with license, rpm,
and source distributions at:

    http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/aix/products/aixos/linux/download.html

There was recent traffic in the Debian email discussion lists about
font copyrights, and I seem to recall that they chose to remove at
least the IBM fonts from their distribution. However, the debate was
heated and possibly polemical, and your views on the matter may
differ.

The Red Hat 8.0 distribution of GNU/Linux contains the above fonts in
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1, plus the Lucidux family (lcdxmo lcdxmr
lcdxro lcdxrr lcdxso lcdxsr) from Bigelow & Holmes and Y&Y. That
directory contains no further licensing information; I expect that the
folks at yandy.com can supply a pointer to the official license
statement.
