i think your question is quite valid on this list since problem swith
graphic formats, fonts, bugs in macros, installing tex's, dvi to pdf, and
whatever come sup in the minds of tex users are discussed on this list
[being a tug.org list]. 

Actually, what puzzles me is how a png can be a problem since its a
relatively simple format. I would not expect that.

A valid question. If not, then all those questions like "how do i include a
graphic in pdftex" are also invalid since that's tex and not pdftex -)

I don't think that there is a reason to excuse. If your question is to be
qualified as silly, then the majority of questions on this list is equally
silly.
