I've never heard of mfpicture. If you mean mfpic, it allows direct
writing of mp source code (though literal backslashes and ~ require
special treatment), and will handle the naming and inclusion of
graphics, and it works in plain (pdf)tex, but that is not really its
main purpose.

A more direct approach is the emp package, which requires latex.
