[metapost] Bug with label?

Can someone else verify this odd result?

label(btex $-\infty$ etex,origin);

produces a minus sign followed by another minus sign whereas

label(btex $-\hspace*{1sp}\infty$ etex,origin);

gives an output that is essentially desired. I'm using LaTeX as my engine
for my labels.

Thoughts?
