[metapost] strange feature

Dear MP users,

I have found a strange thing (perhaps bug, perhaps feature?):
when I start with

verbatimtex
%&fmt_name
etex

the resulting TeX file cannot be compiled as mpx ends the declared line 
with two percent signs (I looked into mpxerr.tex). It works fine if one 
continues the first line with -translate-file=... e.g. which is of 
course not always necessary.
I am not using latex, so can anybody say if

%&latex

works fine? I have found probably the easiest solution for me: I wrote
%&fmt_name \relax
otherwise I will continue to use only plain as I did until now.
