    Isn't true that tex = pdfetex (in the last two TL distributions),
    the same engine used for all usual tasks?

It's actually the opposite.  As Dan said, as of the last two
distributions (or maybe three? Can't recall), we now go to some lengths
to make tex be Knuth's TeX without any extensions.  Before that, tex did
have some extensions enabled, though it was never the pdfetex binary.

What is true is that etex, pdftex, latex, and pdflatex, among others,
all point to the single pdftex binary.
