From FontForge, I could find no technical problems with either of the glyphs (superior figures 1 and 4), and there is no problem with the corresponding inferior figures, which are simply translates of the superior figures. (I have "Use LCD smoothing when available" turned off in System Preferences/General, as I have seen similar problems show up when that is turned on.)

I do have "Use LCD smoothing when available" checked and everything looks nice and sharp even on my non-Retina display. Maybe things have changed as far as that preference option is concerned.

I compiled a simple file and it took a long time to display in TeXShop's preview window; subsequent compiles displayed quickly. I'm wondering if there is some caching going on when a new font that's unknown to the system is first displayed.

Does this document display correctly in Adobe Reader?

Is the Preview problem a regression from 10.12.3?

All of this needs to be reported to http://apple.com/feedback . These issues will catch their attention if a lot of people are reporting problems.
