Here's another example that hits closer to home. Look at the documentation for Cormorant Garamond, located at

/usr/local/texlive/2016/texmf-dist/doc/fonts/cormorantgaramond/cormorantgaramond.pdf

(You may need to update your distribution using TeXLiveUtility to install this package.)

1. Acrobat Reader displays this perfectly.

2. TeXShop and Skim both display a couple of small glitches. On page 2, superior numbers don't all display correctly at magnifications less than 1000. (They always do with the magnifying glass.) From FontForge, I could find no technical problems with either of the glyphs (superior figures 1 and 4), and there is no problem with the corresponding inferior figures, which are simply translates of the superior figures. (I have "Use LCD smoothing when available" turned off in System Preferences/General, as I have seen similar problems show up when that is turned on.)

3. Preview now behaves poorly with pdf files, at least on my machine, in seeming to render all pdf files as low resolution bitmaps, then magnifying those bitmaps. This was not the case in earlier versions of Preview. This behavior reminds me of PDFKit problems from a couple of years ago.

I tried compiling cormorantgaramond.tex in TeXShop, using both latex+dvips and pdflatex, with the same results.
