Apple does not design laptops for optimal heat dissipation (form over function!), and, in some cases, there have also been problems with the heatsink adhesive that attaches the heatsink to the processor. In my case, I believe that it was the photo editing software Aperture that put enough stress on the graphics card to cause it to fail. My logic board was replaced for free under the result of a class action lawsuit.

I did not know. But then my graphics are puny and I never edit photos. I just take them and store them (NOT with iphoto)
That it should have taken a class action lawsuit is all too credible but quite deplorable.
