Henk,

> I just started with a new paper in Latex/Texshop and so a well-known discomfort is on its way. I opened bibtex and put in some references in the paper. Now the problem. It is not possible to use an alias for bst, bib and personal styles: these files require to be put in the (new) folder of the new paper. Otherwise there is no typesetting possible.

Are you using the Mac Finder’s alias? You should use a symbolic link this can be done in the terminal or by the command

ln -s target_path link_path

IIRC. If you do not like terminal then there is a service for this I have it I think it is called Symbolic Linker (free download)

Hope that this helps

Peter
