There is no Mac vs Linux issue. There is latex vs pdflatex issue. Simply on
Linux in your settings typesetting is (by default) using latex, and on Mac
it is pdflatex—but you can change both on the fly.

etex simply allows you to overcome dimension problem (which is handy in
many other cases).
