I have say on one computer as part of TL2013 and here

%asy -f pdf GaussianSurface.asy returns

/usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/asymptote/plain_picture.asy: 1259.17: no
matching function 'axialshade(frame, path[], bool, pen, pair, bool, pen,
pair, bool, bool)'
/usr/local/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/asymptote/plain_picture.asy: 1274.18: no
matching function 'radialshade(frame, path[], bool, pen, pair, real, bool,
pen, pair, real, bool, bool)'

On another I have Asymptote version 2.24svn-r5565 (self compiled)

and here the same generates pdf file with embedded 3D model

Both running MacOSX 10.7.5
