Executing "sudo tlmgr update --all" produced no errors.

I then did uncheck
    TeX Live Utility->Preferences->Install updates for all users

So far, now, normal updating packages through the TeXLive Utility 
proceeds without error. In the log I see that mktexlsr has run OK.

Remaining question: In the log I don't see any reference about scanning 
for map entries. So would the error I originally encountered involve an 
action only when packages are updated that involve fonts? or whenever a 
packages update is run through the Utility?
