[OS X TeX] \makebox{} Ignorance

no!

\begin{minipage}[t]{5cm}
\end{minipage}\hfill
\begin{minipage}[t]{7cm}
\end{minipage}

the option [t] makes the minipages top aligned, if this is wanted.
