You should not do that. NEVER! It's possible that updmap (or the wrapper updmap-sys), a simple Perl script without brains and understanding of file names, takes "/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/fonts/map/dvips/lucida/lucida" as the name of the MAP file fragment and ".map" as its extension.

Updmap-sys and updmap have other options:

  --listmaps                list all active and inactive maps
  --listavailablemaps       same as --listmaps, but without
                             unavailable map files
  --syncwithtrees           disable unavailable map files in updmap.cfg

As Michael mentioned you need to keep your system's stock up-to-date in the ls-R files. 'sudo mktexlsr /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local' performs this task. Then you can check the success:

	kpsewhich -format=map lucida[.map]

When it's found you can add it to updmap's stock and enable its use.

Now you need to disable this very long MAP file fragment. Then you can sync your stock and check which MAP file fragments it knows. Finally perform the enabling and (let us) enjoy the Lucida fonts!
