Should gentium.map appear here somewhere?

Yes, there is no texlive directory in ~/Library.

Unfortunately, all of the above didn't change a thing.

Some additional thoughts:
1) The ownership on all relevant folders in /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local is root or, more precisely, root:wheel. Is that correct?
2) When setting my document, I get the lines:
--
[1{/usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map}]
[2] (./gentium.aux)
--
I checked the pdftex.map file and there is no gentium.map to be found. There should be some corresponding entry, right?
