Herb,

don't be that simple minded to assume that one file could fix all problems!

The file ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist can be a starting point, a backbone, that is reused here and there and somewhere else. It can provide easy solutions for minor problems (you maybe don't imagine because you don't work with with so many other specialised software than TeX).
