This *might* be true for Swiss use, but this use is lax, having to  
cope with four languages (even the French double quotes are used  
wrongly). For the remainder of the world ß and ss are not equal. And  
there even exist a few extremists who fight for the introduction of a  
capitalised form of ß. ß influences the way a vowel is being  
articulated: long. With ss the vowel becomes a short one. Examples:  
die Maße vs. die Masse.
