Try my first proposal! (And if it continues not to work: try XeLaTeX!  
After saving a copy of this file in UTF-8 encoding and removing babel  
and adding the fontspec package. BTW, it's always a *HUGE* idea to  
experiment with copies. That's the reason why some magnum opi really  
do exist in a material form – not only in spoken about form.)
