Yes, 'they' were. This has nothing to do with the OS version, and everything
with the format of the fonts used, as Jonathan Kew pointed out, twice.
Seeing as he is the developer of XeTeX, I'd take his word for it.

Since the original poster appears to have lost interest, though, it's really
not worth pursuing further, is it?
