[OS X TeX] simple question: where are the tex directories on a mac?

I second that.

In fact, though, you need not place your own style file "in the same  
folder as your working document" as long as you give the path.

Here, for instance is the kind of preamble I use:

\documentclass[11pt]{book}
	\usepackage{../StyleSheets/Preamble}
	\usepackage{../StyleSheets/GraphicsPaths}

where the folder StylSheets is parallel to the folder in which the  
document itself is.
