Folks,

In the release notes for TeXShop 2.34, I mentioned promoting LuaLaTeX to one of the default engines.
Since TeX Live 2010 isn't out yet, the reason for this change was unclear, and some folks have leapt to
fanciful explanations.

If you use TeXShop 2.34 with TeX Live 2010 and don't change any preference, you'll typeset with
pdfLaTeX, as now. A couple of years ago, XeTeX reached maturity and I installed the XeTeX engines
by default. All I'm saying is that LuaTeX is now complete enough that users may want to try it, so I
install the LuaLaTeX engine by default.

I think of XeTeX and LuaTeX as parallel projects, each bringing Unicode and the full power of Opentype
fonts to TeX. This is an important development, particularly important to those who use non-Roman
scripts. I admire both projects tremendously, because the authors have done the hard slogging needed
to convert ideas to workable programs.
