Doesn't make any difference

I doesn't work on the two machines I work with (iMac and MBPro, both with the same settings).

Here are examples of the output:

with the lines after \usepackage{microtype} strange characters appear before the "1":

I like to vary the fonts, rotating between mathdesign with utopia, garamanond and charter, and the kpfonts.
