That is strange, as my SL "locate" supports multiple architectures:
file /usr/bin/locate
/usr/bin/locate: Mach-O universal binary with 3 architectures
/usr/bin/locate (for architecture x86_64):	Mach-O 64-bit executable
x86_64
/usr/bin/locate (for architecture i386):	Mach-O executable i386
/usr/bin/locate (for architecture ppc7400):	Mach-O executable ppc

And as far as the other related programs in /usr/libexec:
/usr/libexec/locate.bigram: Mach-O universal binary with 3 architectures
/usr/libexec/locate.bigram (for architecture x86_64):	Mach-O 64-bit
executable x86_64
/usr/libexec/locate.bigram (for architecture i386):	Mach-O executable
i386
/usr/libexec/locate.bigram (for architecture ppc7400):	Mach-O
executable ppc
/usr/libexec/locate.code: Mach-O universal binary with 3 architectures
/usr/libexec/locate.code (for architecture x86_64):	Mach-O 64-bit
executable x86_64
/usr/libexec/locate.code (for architecture i386):	Mach-O executable i386
/usr/libexec/locate.code (for architecture ppc7400):	Mach-O executable
ppc
/usr/libexec/locate.concatdb: POSIX shell script text executable
/usr/libexec/locate.mklocatedb: POSIX shell script text executable
/usr/libexec/locate.updatedb: POSIX shell script text executable
