[OS X TeX] MacTeX 2009

I experimentally tried putting the MacTeX 2009 distribution on my Mac  
Pro (10.5.8) and updated it using the TeXLive Utility without  
incident.  It works fine by the way.  Feeling emboldened I used the  
same installer to try it on my MacBook Pro (10.5.8) and it also  
apparently works fine in typesetting.  The TeXLive Utility, however,  
has an error when I try updating it (again using the same mirror site  
that I used on the Mac Pro).  I was hoping that someone out there  
could parse the log file from the TeXLive Utility run on the laptop  
and give me a hint of what is going wrong.   I noted that the error  
regarding kpsewhich and tried the same command on the MacPro (on which  
the TeXLive utility works fine) and both return the root symbol (which  
I guess is wrong).  Any suggestions as to how to fix the install on  
the MacPro?
