[OS X TeX] ligature fi not appearing

Dear TeXers

I generally lurk and am not expert in this...

Suddenly (it seems) ligatures 'fi' is not appearing in pdfs (so
`definition' is coming out as `denition').

I'm using the package times and have TexLive 2008 selected in
the TeX distribution System Preference.

I'm not even sure what to report or check in terms of versions
installed and so on and would welcome guidance on what I should
be providing to get some help with this:-)

I'm using BBEdit 9.2 and TeXShop 2.26 (the latest version)

I only noticed this today -- and installed 10.5.7 last night
(the only major change I've made at any level recently).

Grateful for any help, including what other info is needed to
diagnose this...I've appended the console log
