[OS X TeX] Missing $ inserted in a "variations" environment

Seriously:

(1) From the docvariations.tex, I can't get

Voici un exemple ÈlÈmentaire :

$$
\begin{variations}
         x        & \mI &    &     &  0  &       &    & \pI \\
\filet
   \m{\frc{1}{x}} & \h0 & \d & \mI & \bb & \h\pI & \d &  0  \\
\end{variations}
$$

to work

(2) There is also "un petit programme en Perl" which can be found at  
http://zoonek.free.fr/LaTeX/Tableau/1.html

Haven't had the time to investigate
