[OS X TeX] Section 0 in book class

You are absolutely right: Placing \addtocounter{section}{-1} after  
\chapter does it.

I guess this has to do with the fact that the section number includes  
the chapter number so I should have thought of it.

Still …

Well, my curiosity has been satisfied.
