Although it can import CSV files, which helps a lot in this.

For me, and others,  the preview doesn't work; 
basic input functions do.  Since I often use 
Excel for other purposes, I like to have cut and 
paste functionality there.

I try to, but many of my students and colleagues 
use it, and I haven't really messed around enough 
with Calc to know its limitations.

That's very helpful, as I found installing/using 
it not at all obvious for the uninitiated. (Of 
course, instructions in German aren't too obvious 
for the uninitiated either :-) (Yes, I mean this 
only as a joke.))
