keep in mind that \begin{center} \end{cetner} will add extra vertical  
space (See the FAQ).
the user of \centering is more appropriate, though you'll want to  
constrain it withing some group (either \begin{table} ... \end{table},  
of an explicit group like {\centering table goes here} or  
\begingroup ... \endgroup
