Okay, I'm downloading the original MacTeX 2008 and will see if I can
reproduce the problem.

That definitely should not be mirror.ctan.org, especially if you change it
in preferences.  Very odd.

While TLU is running, do you see any output in its run log (the bottom
pane)?  When that dialog comes up, hit Cancel to avoid the failure, and then
you can copy all of that output and send it to me.

Well, it's essentially crashing because of an inconsistency in the program.
This is annoying, but it avoids messing up your system by installing under
conditions that violate my assumptions in the code.
