Maybe a similar issue: using "cmbright" fonts (regular, not bold)  
results in the i's and l's (ell) printed as thin vertical lines when  
printed from Preview or TeXShop, but it works fine from Acrobat.
I have not investigated this so far with other fonts, but I will try…
