``to no avail'' doesn't say much ---there had to be some messages in  
Terminal when you did that.

I guess you forgot to do `` sudo texhash '' before doing `` sudo  
updmap-sys ...''.

No, the above (/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local) is right.
