The only correct answer to these questions is "Your mileage may vary."  
I have three macs that did simple upgrades on and I haven't had any  
problems. But other people do. I did the upgrade precisely because I  
didn't want the hassle of reinstalling all the TeX stuff, and I  
haven't regretted it.

If you have a spare disk and a copy of SuperDuper or Carbon Copy  
Cloner, then you might try making a duplicate of your existing drive  
and then trying the straight upgrade. If you're unhappy, you can  
always go for erase and install afterwards.
