[OS X TeX] thanks

Hi everyone,
Thanks a million to Luis and Robert for your prompt and accurate reply. It was a great help and I could partially compile my documents. However there are as it happens there is multiple tex distribution in my system the gwtex and the mactex and i am somehow unable to keep both and link one to itexmac and the other to texmaker.
Any idea about what should be done will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks once again
Soumya

Me too! Gary, thank you very, very much.

And sincere thanks from a non-poster to all those who post regularly

Can you provide a minimal sample? The font is supplied by Apple, so
most users on this list should have it.

You probably get a better answer on the XeTeX mailing list.

What Roussanka does I do for Russian; I include a snippet:

\documentclass[11pt]{article}
\usepackage[T2A]{fontenc}
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage[russian,english]{babel}
\begin{document}

\selectlanguage{english}

\textbf{Verbs of motion}

\hspace*{1.45in}\emph{uni} \hspace*{2.8in}\emph{multi}
\selectlanguage{russian}
\begin{center}
идт\textbf{и}, ход\textbf{и}ть
\selectlanguage{english}
to go by foot, walk, set off (\emph{501 Russian Verbs}, p.\,490)
\selectlanguage{russian}
\end{center}
\vspace*{-0.25in}
\begin{tabbing}
\hspace*{1.2in}\=\hspace*{1in}\=\hspace{30ex}\=\hspace*{1in}\=\kill
\end{tabbing}
\end{document}

A caveat: you have to save the files as Unicode (UTF-8) (in TeXShop,
there's a preference.) I got the Cyrillic with the Russian Phonetic
font from Apple's International font. Command-space toggles the font
from English to Russian Phonetic.

For Greek, I use a different approach:

\documentclass[11pt]{report}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage[english,greek]{babel}
\languageattribute{greek}{polutoniko}
\usepackage{gfsporson}
\begin{document}
\normalsize
\selectlanguage{greek}
\begin{center}
\textporson{kt~hm'a te  >es a>ie`i  m~allon >`h  >ag'wnisma >es t`o
paraqr~hma >ako'uein x'ugkeitai}  \\
\end{center}
\selectlanguage{english}
\noindent the work was done not to win the applause of the moment, but
as a possession for all time.

\hfill Thucydides, \emph{The Peloponnesian War}, I.22.5

\end{document}

Here, the accented Greek is typed in the Roman alphabet.

And, of course, there is the \fontspec package and XeTeX, which is
probably the easiest and most powerful
approach. But I'll let someone who knows this package a lot better
tell you.

Good luck!

Adobe Reader and Acrobat use their own PDF rendering engine, which is
different from the built-in OS X rendering engine used by other
applications (Preview, TeXShop, ...). What you see is a manifestation
of that.

I tried with your test file and the two XDVI-to-PDF drivers XeLaTeX
can use: the default (for now) xdv2pdf and the alternative (for now)
xdvipdfmx. Both embed the fonts (Cochin and Zapfino) properly, thus
there's no problem there. It really just comes down to how Adobe
applications render PDF, namely to how they use font hints to draw on
screen.

Remember that Adobe applications for the Mac are essentially second-
thought hasty Mac ports of Windows applications, though that probably
isn't the only cause for the problem, given you experience the same
rendering issues with Acrobat on Windows.

Here are screenshots on what I see with Acrobat and Preview (on
Leopard 10.5.2):

http://homepage.mac.com/bvoisin/.cv/bvoisin/Sites/.Public/Acrobat.png-zip.zip
http://homepage.mac.com/bvoisin/.cv/bvoisin/Sites/.Public/Preview.png-zip.zip

Acrobat output isn't that bad: the vertical alignment of characters in
the "Introduction" title is admittedly not as nice as that with
Preview, but that's probably just the result of the rendering choices
hardwired within Acrobat.

Depend on the settings you used, going to PostScript may be stripping
out the hints.

Also, the appearance of subtle features can be influenced by your anti-
aliasing features.

If the book is being printed commercially, then the lack of the hints
won't matter (if the text needs the hinting it's too small to be
reproduced). If you want to distribute the .pdf, then skip the .ps
creation and redistillation for the distributed version.

Thanks Bruno for your help.

 From your screenshots, it appears that your Acrobat rendering is
better than my son's or what I get for windows. If you are willing to
look, the pdf produced by XeLateX and TeXShop (with standard
settings,"Regular") is here
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/francois.chaplais/test.pdf
A screenshot of what I get with the Latest Acrobat for windows with
win XP SP2 under VMWare Fusion is here
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/francois.chaplais/AcroWin.jpg
 From what I have seen on the XeTeX site ( http://scripts.sil.org/cms/
scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&item_id=xetex_download )
XeTeX has not been updated since 2006, so I assume I have the latest
version.

Or maybe the pdf engine has changed for Leopard? I am under 10.4.11.

Best

There's indeed something wrong with your file: with Acrobat on
Leopard, I get essentially the same as you do

http://homepage.mac.com/bvoisin/.cv/bvoisin/Sites/.Public/Chaplais.png-zip.zip

I can't really figure out what's wrong. Here's what I get using the
pdfinfo and pdffonts tools from xpdf <http://users.phg-online.de/tk/MOSXS/
 >:

XeTeX has indeed been updated: the version included in MacTeX or gwTeX
is from early 2007. And the version on the SVN repository (uncompiled,
you've got to compile it yourself) has received a very large number of
modifications/fixes. This version is at

http://scripts.sil.org/svn-view/xetex/TRUNK.tar.gz?view=tar

and the compilation instructions are those in the section "Building
from scratch" from

http://scripts.sil.org/xetex_linux

You need to have Xcode installed in order to be able to compile.

Personally I'm just using the version from MacTeX, for which:

$ xetex -version
XeTeX 3.141592-0.996 (Web2C 7.5.6)
kpathsea version 3.5.6
Copyright 2007 SIL International.
Kpathsea is copyright 2007 Karl Berry and Olaf Weber.
There is NO warranty. Redistribution of this software is
covered by the terms of both the XeTeX copyright and
the Lesser GNU General Public License.
For more information about these matters, see the file
named COPYING and the XeTeX source.
Primary author of XeTeX: Jonathan Kew.
Kpathsea written by Karl Berry, Olaf Weber, and others.

Compiled with ICU version 3.4 [with modifications for XeTeX]
Compiled with zlib version 1.2.3; using 1.2.3
Compiled with FreeType2 version 2.2.1; using 2.2.1
Using Mac OS X Carbon, Cocoa & QuickTime frameworks

Do you get the same info regarding FreeType and such? Did you install
FreeType? It's normally installed automatically with MacTeX. With
gwTeX you've got to install it separately (there's an i-Package for it).

> Or maybe the pdf engine has changed for Leopard? I am under 10.4.11.

What you might try is use xdvipdfmx instead of xdv2pdf. Assuming
you're using TeXShop, go to ~/Library/TeXShop/Engines/Inactive/XeTeX/
and move XeTeX-xdvipdfmx.engine and XeLaTeX-xdvipdfmx.engine to ~/
Library/TeXShop/Engines/. Then, in your input file, change the line

%!TEX TS-program = xelatex

to

%!TEX TS-program = xelatex-xdvipdfmx

Typeset, and see what happens.

Hope this works,

Bruno Voisin

First: you have to have a working TeX installation.
The easiest way to do it is to install MacTeX. You can get it here: http://mirror.ctan.org/systems/mac/mactex/MacTeX.dmg
Use the installer included in the downloaded file and that's it.
(Note: it is a lengthy download)

Second: You have to tell TeXMaker where your TeX programs are. Open
the "Preferences..." menu under TexMaker. You get what should be a
familiar dialog box with entries for "LaTeX", "dvips", etc.
If you installed MacTex as above, you can set latex, pdflatex, bibtex,
makeindex, ps2pdf to the correct path by replacing whatever comes
before the program name (on my intel mac it was /usr/local/teTeX/bin/
i386-apple-darwin-current)
by /usr/texbin.

For example, the pdflatex entry should read: "/usr/texbin/pdflatex" -
interaction=nonstopmode %.tex

You can leave the gs, dvips, Dvi Viewer, Ps Viewer and Pdf Viewer as
they are.

You should be ready to go.

Happy LaTeXing in Mac OS X :-)

I have the same output for xetex -version in Terminal.

done it; it typesets with the same result in Windows Acrobat :-(

It turns out that I have a large library (URW) of fonts that I got
when purchasing Canvas 5. I typeset the test file using a Garamond
postscript type 1 font family and, well, I do not have any baseline
problem anymore at screen size in Windows.
I have re-typeset the document with the TT fonts installed instead of
the PS ones, and the the result has the same appearance.

So maybe the culprit is Cochin, or the way it is PDF'd in Tiger?

BTW the info on Cochin in Font Book is (in French)
    Nom PostScript    Cochin
    Nom complet    Cochin
    Famille    Cochin
    Style    Regular
    Type    TrueType
    Langue français, anglais, allemand, espagnol, italien, suédois,
danois, finnois, portugais
    Version    5.0d1
    Emplacement    /Library/Fonts/Cochin.dfont
    Nom unique Cochin; 5.0d1; Mon, Dec. 1, 2003

Anyway, thanks for the help. I appreciate the amount of expertise on
this list.

I just checked on the Mac of a colleague, still on Tiger: exactly the
same problem shows up as for you. So (Cochin in) Tiger is indeed the
culprit!

Generally, as Maarten Sneep suggested, for XeTeX-specific issues, and
especially those related to fonts, it's better to post to the XeTeX
mailing list <http://tug.org/mailman/listinfo/xetex>. There you'll
find people extremely knowledgeable on fonts; I'm pretty confident
your problem would have been diagnosed there in no time.

Just be aware that the XeTeX list is multi-platform, owing to the now
multi-platform character of XeTeX, so you need to specify your
platform (Mac, Windows, Linux and which brand of it) in order to see
your question addressed efficiently.
