[OS X TeX] environment for symbol notation

How about a tabular environment, something like:

\begin{tabular}{lp{10cm}}
$x$ & ong, windy and verbose  description that may span more
           than one line, but if does, it should be properly indented.  
\\
$y$ & newdescription
\end{tabular}
