[OS X TeX] Euro symbol

Morning.

What's necessary to typeset an Euro symbol when entering ALT+L on a  
German keyboard in the source file?

Years ago I've used a line

\catcode`\€=\active \def€{\euro{}}

in my basic styles file. But this doesn't work since a long time.
