Howdy,

The bad news is that pdfsync does have some artifacts that can change  
pages, etc., occasionally.

The good news is that TeXLive 2008 (i.e. MacTeX-2008) has a new system  
called synctex, built into the binaries, that is much more accurate.  
Unfortunately it will take some time before software will take  
advantage of it but, in the long run the problem will be solved.
