For extracting, for instance, pp. 1-20 from in.pdf and saving it in out.pdf
you may do the unix command

gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dFirstPage=1 -dLastPage=20 -dNOPAUSE -dQUIET -dBATCH -sOutputFile=out.pdf in.pdf

Curiously Adobe Reader refuses to do this on Mac OS X, why Adobe knows
that on the same platform Preview, TexShop, ... are willing to do so.
