Dear LaTeXites,

My preamble reads (in part):

%%!TEX TS-program = xelatexmk
%%!TEX encoding = UTF-8 Unicode

\documentclass[twocolumn,11pt]{article}
\usepackage[LY1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{mathpazo}
\usepackage[cm-default]{fontspecmodified}
\defaultfontfeatures{Mapping=tex-text}
\setmainfont{Palatino}
\usepackage{amssymb,amsmath,pifont}
\usepackage[dvipdfm]{graphicx}
\usepackage[]{tikz,pgfbaseimage}
\usetikzlibrary{shapes,arrows}
\usepackage{fancyhdr}
\usepackage{xspace}
\usepackage{tabularx}
\usepackage{paralist,sectsty}
\usepackage{subfig}
\usepackage[raggedright,rightcaption]{sidecap}
\usepackage[pdftitle={Gestalt
Detection},colorlinks=true,linkcolor=blue]{hyperref}
\usepackage{apacite}
\usepackage{pdfsync}
\usepackage[left=.5in, right = .5in, top=.6in, bottom = .6in]{geometry}
\pagestyle{fancy}
\allsectionsfont{\sffamily\mdseries\upshape}
\captionsetup[subfigure]{margin=4pt}

My bib file contains entries with accents, such as
   author = {Oja, Hannu and Sirki{\"a}, Seija and Eriksson, Jan},

The console complains about \cite<ICA:>{Comon1994,OjaEtAl2006}:

! Undefined control sequence.
\UseTextAccent ...up \@firstofone \let \@curr at enc
                                                   \cf at encoding
\@use at text@en...
l.712 ...alysis \cite<ICA:>{Comon1994,OjaEtAl2006}

?

Any thoughts?
