Once long ago, I had a problem which I think was with SFTP as well. I
don't remember what the problem exactly was, which software it was
with. But it turned out eventually to be related to passive vs.
active FTP, and possibly was related also to the OS X firewall being
activated, as far as I remember.

I never understood exactly the meaning of active vs. passive in this
context (they're related to authentication being initiated from the
FTP server or from the host, I think, but it seems the use of the
terms passive and active is opposite to what intuition would suggest
within this context, a bit like the use of the terms client and
server for X11).

In any case, I think the take-home message of that problem-solving
experience was: when firewalls are involved, you need to pay
attention to whether transfer is active and passive, and to exactly
find the precise combination of settings that's working the surest
bet is trial-and-error.
