"Brute force!" That's as clever as TeX: it uses just a few real files  
and the rest consists of less expensive symbolic links (the mode of  
operation is derived from that "secondary" name, so that "DVI" latex  
and pdflatex can be the same programme). And the hardlink costs  
nothing (in a UNIX file system): just some bits in the directory's node.
