[OS X TeX] fonts in leopard

Hi,

could someone answer the following questions ?
1) what are font caches ?
2) where precisely are they located in Leopard ?
3) what happens if one removes them ? (the entire folder)
4) what happens when one removes some or all items within the cache  
folder but does not remove the folder itself ?
5) how should one 'empty' the font caches ?
6) when one logs out, does that affect the font caches  ?
