Usually the dvips instead of the pdftex folder is used. The name
"dvips" might be just a proxy, because the updmap script creates the
MAP files for dvips, dvipdfm, and pdfTeX.

How did you find this? What is the proof that updmap really read in
this MAP file fragment?

Can you look into the LOG file of updmap to see whether it was
writing into

Peter,

I just abandoned the whole thing and started over. I placed all font
and related support files in ~/Library/texmf. And then I ran "updmap
--enable Map [name of Map file]." Now both fonts work. So the only
way I could get it done was to set up the fonts locally. Is there a
way to make the fonts work system-wide while having the font and
support files in ~/Library/texmf? Or am I completely misunderstanding
the TDS hierarchy? I have gwTeX and TeXLive 2007 installed on my
system. So I want the fonts to be available to both distributions.

Thanks for the help.

Richard
