Okay, I found the psfonts.map file. I open it in the text editor
(texshop in this case) and it ends up opening psfonts_t1.map. I guess
that's a pointer in the psfonts.map file. Anyway I find the following
in the file:

cmex10 CMEX10 <cmex10.pfb
cmex7 TeX-cmex7 <fmex7.pfb
cmex8 TeX-cmex8 <fmex8.pfb
cmex9 TeX-cmex9 <fmex9.pfb

I'm thinking why not just change the cmex7, 8, and 9 lines to match
cmex10 line thusly:

cmex7 CMEX7 <cmex7.pfb)
cmex8 CMEX8 <cmex8.pfb)
cmex9 CMEX9 <cmex9.pfb)

to see if it can then find the cmex9 font. But I notice the statement
at the top of the page:

Don't change this file directly. Edit texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg
% and run updmap to recreate this file.

So I open updmap.cfg and find this:

# 7-8-9 sizes for cmex taken from TeXtrace2001
MixedMap ttcmex.map

# ps-type1 versions for cm+ams; CTAN:fonts/cm/ps-type1/bluesky
MixedMap bsr.map
MixedMap bsr-interpolated.map

Is that telling me anything? Should I change this udpmap.cfp file
and if so, what should be changed? And then how do I "run updmap to
recreate" the psfonts.map file.

Thanks so much if you can understand any of this enough to give me a hint.

Sue
