Well, what I get are boxes in the inline as well as the displayed
equation (i.e., the png file). I assume that what is getting input
into 'convert' is at fault, but I can't be completely sure. I do also
know that I get the equations properly typeset with pdflatex. Maybe it
has to do with what Peter said about the fonts needing to be converted
into the proper format. (I have Tex Live 2007, which I guess only
includes free fonts and does not seem to stop pdflatex from obtaining
the correct fonts). As to Jeffrey's comment about encodings, I have
tried with both T1 and OT1, which doesn't seem to matter. I don't know
anything about the internals of htlatex, but I guess it must have
something to do with some fundamental difference in the way it deals
with fonts as compared to pdflatex. In any case, I thank both Eitan
and Jeffrey for help in getting the body font to do what I want. I
think I'll just take the path of least resistance and let the math
fonts be in a serif style.
