If I understand correctly what you're looking for, take a look at the 
PDF Download extension to Firefox:

"Allows to choose if you want to view a PDF file inside the browser 
(as PDF or HTML), if you want to view it outside Firefox with your 
default or custom PDF reader, or if you want to download it!"

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/636/

The "Open PDF" option downloads the file to a Temporary Items folder 
rather than saving it to the Desktop.
