Thanks for the clarification. I was making a confusion between  
mftrace and metatype1. I've looked quickly at the URL provided in the  
Latin Modern docs for MetaType1 <ftp://bop.eps.gda.pl/pub/metatype1/ 
 >, and it seems MetaType1 is far from trivial to use. Not for the  
faint of heart.

The Latin Modern docs also say Latin Modern is based upon the BSR/Y&Y  
PostScript Type 1 version of the Computer Modern and AMS fonts, which  
seems to indicate it wasn't simply a conversion from the original MF  
code to PS Type 1. Strange.
